Auchan Hungary launches a groundbreaking local supplier initiative in Debrecen, aimed at supporting small and medium-sized producers. The ambitious programme seeks to bolster local food production by substantially increasing regional product purchases - from the current 300 million forints to a potential 1.8-2.4 billion forints. Through a strategic collaboration between Auchan, Magyar Termék Nonprofit Ltd. and the National Agricultural Chamber (NAK), the company aims to provide a platform for local producers while increasing the visibility and availability of authentic Hungarian products. The enterprise, currently selling 46,000 products of which 86% are of Hungarian origin, sees potential for smaller producers to grow into national suppliers.
Local Supplier Strategy
Auchan Hungary launched a local supplier initiative in Debrecen on Thursday, focusing on supporting small and medium-sized producers. Nagy Attila, the sales director, revealed that they currently purchase approximately 300 * 10⁶ forints of local products, with the ambition to increase this amount to 300 * 10⁶ * 6 to 300 * 10⁶ * 8 [1].
Product Range and Local Focus
Currently, Auchan trades 46,000 products, of which 86% are of Hungarian origin. Out of nearly six thousand ‘Magyar termék’ certified products, Auchan sells 1,200, including 126 own brands. The company wants to give these local suppliers the opportunity to grow into national suppliers [1].
Strategic Collaboration
The company is collaborating with Magyar Termék Nonprofit Ltd. and the National Agricultural Chamber (NAK). Benedek Eszter, director of Magyar Termék, emphasized that they represent 260 companies with a total turnover of 4500 * 10⁹ forints and 48,000 employees [1].
Financial Context
Auchan Hungary, with 5,400 employees, achieved a net turnover of 366,312 * 10⁹ forints in 2024, a slight decrease compared to the previous year. Notably, the net result increased from 586 * 10⁶ to 6,894 * 10⁹ forints [1].
