Walmart’s Strategic Expansion in India

Walmart has announced an ambitious growth strategy for global sourcing from India, with the aim of sourcing 10 billion dollars worth of goods annually by 2027. The company has already imported more than 30 billion dollars in goods from India, underscoring the strong historical connection with this growing economy [1][2].

Multi-Year Presence and Development

The company has been active in India for over two decades, with its first sourcing office established in Bengaluru in 2002. In 2018, Walmart acquired a controlling 77% stake in Flipkart, the local e-commerce platform, and also gained control of the digital payment solution PhonePe [3][4].

Empowerment of Local Enterprises

Through the Walmart Vriddhi programme, the company supports micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in India. To date, over 70,000 MSME businesses have been trained, with plans to support an additional 100,000 enterprises in the next three years [5][6].

CEO Doug McMillon emphasises the growing significance of the Indian market, with a focus on digital innovation, inclusive supply chains, and community development. Walmart’s total revenue reached 681 billion in 2024-2025, demonstrating the scale of the enterprise [7][8].
