Auchan Romania has introduced a groundbreaking bulk collection system at its Militari hypermarket in Bucharest. The system, supplied by Tomra, enables customers to return unsorted PET, aluminium, and glass containers with SGR logo without prior separation. Automatic identification and counting of containers results in an immediate deposit refund of 0.50 RON per item. This innovation aligns with Auchan’s broader sustainability strategy and underscores their early adoption of national recycling initiatives, with over 140 recycling points already established in various Romanian cities.
Innovative Recycling System
Auchan Romania has introduced an advanced bulk collection system at its Militari hypermarket in Bucharest, supplied by Tomra. The system allows customers to directly return unsorted PET, aluminium, and glass containers with the SGR logo without prior separation [1]. The machine automatically identifies and counts the containers, with customers receiving an immediate deposit refund of 0.50 RON per item [1].
Sustainability Strategy
This initiative fits within Auchan’s broader sustainability strategy, with the company having already installed over 140 recycling points in cities such as Bucharest, Timișoara, Cluj, and Constanța [1]. The implementation reflects Auchan’s commitment to environmentally friendly practices and improved collection methods [2].
National Impact
The introduction of this system aligns with national recycling efforts. Recent data shows that seven out of ten Romanians return all packaging with the SGR symbol, with an average of 17 kg of returned packaging per person since the programme’s launch [3].
