Procos Reveals Challenges in Specialised Retail Trade: Minimal Turnover Decline Masks Complex Dynamics
Parijs, zondag, 8 juni 2025.
The trade association Procos has presented a detailed analysis of specialised retail in France, reporting a marginal turnover decline of 0.2%. This subtle shift masked an underlying complex retail environment with highly variable monthly performances. Some months showed surprising growth, while other periods proved significantly more challenging for retailers. The analysis suggests that the sector is experiencing volatile consumer spending and a dynamic market environment that requires continuous adaptation strategies for retailers to remain competitive and operate profitably.
Monthly Retail Performance: A Detailed Picture
The specialised retail sector in France demonstrated a remarkable dynamic in November 2017, with an activity growth of 4% after a difficult October when turnover declined by 12.7% [1]. The year-to-date results were slightly negative with a decline of 0.1%, which emphasises the volatility of the retail market.
Location-Specific Retail Trends
The geographical distribution of retail activities showed interesting differences. City centres performed better with a growth of 4.8%, while peripheral locations demonstrated an increase of 3.6% [1]. Within peripheral areas, shopping centres showed a more moderate growth of 2.6%.
Annual Performance Analysis
After 11 months, Procos reported that city centre streets showed a slight decline of 0.8%, while peripheral locations recorded a modest growth of 0.3% [1]. Notably, shopping centres performed positively (+3%) in city centres, but slightly negatively (-0.4%) in peripheral areas.
