In a strategic review, Metro AG reveals ambitious climate goals that redefine the future of food wholesale. The company commits to a scientifically-backed reduction of 42% in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, with a parallel pathway for Scope 3 emissions. Notably, the planned 30% reduction in food waste through innovative supply chain optimisation, with AI-driven order processes and dynamic pricing strategies at the centre. This approach positions Metro AG not only as a sustainability leader but also demonstrates how wholesalers can transform climate change from a threat into a strategic opportunity.
Metro AG Climate Goals
Metro AG thoroughly revised its climate strategy last Tuesday with ambitious reduction targets. The company commits to a scientifically-based emission reduction of 42 percent in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, with 2019/2020 as the reference year [1]. Furthermore, Metro aims to reduce Scope 3 emissions in the value chain by 25 percent, excluding food and agriculture-related sectors (FLAG) [2].
Innovative Food Waste Approach
A core component of Metro’s strategy is the ambition to reduce food waste in its own operations by 30 percent by 2030, using 2021/22 as the base year [2]. This will be achieved through advanced technologies such as AI-supported order management systems, dynamic price adjustments based on shelf life and demand, and expansion of food donation programmes [2].
Strategic Sustainability Efforts
Metro AG has been a member of the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi) since 2019 and updated its targets in June 2025 in accordance with SBTi standards [2]. The company has also expanded its CO2 reporting to include the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) of its sales products, based on sales volumes and emission factors from established secondary databases [2].
