Fashion chain Kiabi has announced a strategic partnership with Micolet to strengthen its sustainability strategy. The ‘Beebs by Kiabi’ initiative aims to revolutionise the fashion sector by extending the lifecycle of clothing items. With an advanced second-hand platform, Kiabi seeks to reduce overproduction and minimise its carbon footprint. By collaborating with Micolet, which achieved a trading volume of 9 million euros in 2023, Kiabi demonstrates its commitment to a more circular and responsible fashion approach. This innovative step is part of Kiabi’s Vision 2035, which places sustainability at its core and emphasises fewer, but higher-quality clothing collections.
Strategic Partnership with Micolet
Kiabi has taken an innovative step in the fashion industry by establishing a strategic partnership with Micolet, a Spanish company specialising in second-hand fashion. In 2023, Micolet achieved a gross trading volume of 9 million euros and processed more than 1.4 million clothing items, with an average of 150,000 articles sold per month [1].
Vision 2035 Sustainability Strategy
The ‘Beebs by Kiabi’ initiative aligns with the company’s sustainability strategy, focused on reducing overproduction and extending the lifecycle of clothing items. Kiabi’s Vision 2035 encompasses an ESG roadmap with 16 environmental, social, and governance indicators [2]. The fashion chain is reorienting itself towards a more conscious offering with fewer, but more sustainable, timeless, and versatile collections.
Innovative Material Selection
The company is increasingly focusing on sustainable materials such as organic cotton, recycled polyester, and innovative fibres. Additionally, Kiabi applies technologies that significantly reduce water and chemical usage in the textile process [3].
Business Leaders’ Perspectives
José Luis Carceller, CEO of Kiabi Spain and Portugal, emphasises that integrating second-hand items into their business model strengthens their commitment to a more sustainable approach. Aritza Loroño, founder of Micolet, sees the collaboration as a crucial step in democratising second-hand fashion [4].
