Circular Fashion: France Collects Nearly 300,000 Tonnes of Textiles in Record Year

Refashion reports a remarkable increase in textile collection in France for 2024. In total, 289,393 tonnes of used clothing, linen, and footwear were collected, representing a growth of 7.8% compared to the previous year. Of this amount, 99.8% was valued, with 56.8% resold in the second-hand market and 24.28% recycled. With 47,948 collection points in 16,728 municipalities - approximately one collection point per 1,414 inhabitants - France demonstrates a strong commitment to circular fashion and sustainable textile processing.

Eco-Contribution and Financial Performance

Refashion’s eco-contribution showed a significant increase in 2024, with the generated amount rising to €139.1 million, compared to €101.5 million in the previous year. This average of €0.04 per product placed on the market underscores the growing financial involvement in sustainable textile processing initiatives [1].

Reuse and Repair Efforts

In 2024, Refashion invested €7 million in reuse projects, with €4 million spent on calls for expressions of interest and €2 million on traceability support. Additionally, €6.79 million was paid out as a repair bonus, resulting in the revival of 554,062 products, including 444,558 pairs of shoes [1].

Textile Collection and Valuation

Of the total 289,393 tonnes of textiles collected, 288,814.214 tonnes were valued. Of these, 164,375.224 tonnes were resold in the second-hand market and 70,264.62 tonnes were recycled. With 47,948 collection points spread across 16,728 municipalities, or one collection point per 1,414 inhabitants, France shows a strong commitment to circular fashion [1].
