Alcampo Restructures: 16 Supermarkets Closed and Staff Reduction
Madrid, donderdag, 19 juni 2025.
Auchan’s Spanish subsidiary Alcampo has implemented a drastic reorganisation plan that will significantly shake up the retail sector. The agreement with employee representatives includes the permanent closure of 16 supermarkets and staff reductions across 127 remaining locations. In total, up to 633 employees will be affected, although the final agreement represents an 11% reduction from the original plan. The restructuring is a response to changing consumer preferences, with customers increasingly favouring smaller store formats and online purchases.
Geographical Impact of the Restructuring
The store closures will primarily occur in specific Spanish regions, including the Autonomous Community of Madrid, Castile and León, Galicia, Navarra, and the Basque Country [1]. The restructuring affects a total of 127 stores, with 12.598 percent of locations being directly closed or substantially modified.
Personnel Consequences
The reorganisation plan will impact up to 633 employees, with reductions spread across eight hypermarkets and 119 supermarkets in various Spanish regions such as Andalusia, Madrid, and Galicia [1]. Notably, the final agreement is 11 percent less extensive than originally planned [2].
Protection Measures
Alcampo has built in special protection measures for vulnerable employee groups. Employees with disabilities and victims of gender-related violence will be protected from dismissal, except at locations that are definitively closed [1].
Strategic Adjustments
The restructuring follows the acquisition of 224 supermarkets in 2023, with the company now recognising that not all acquired locations were suitable for their business model [2]. The strategic shift aims to strengthen smaller store formats and digital sales channels, responding to changing consumer preferences [3].
