Wellington, woensdag, 2 juli 2025.
In a groundbreaking collaboration, Woolworths announces a new prevention plan where police will tackle in-store offences with fines comparable to traffic tickets. Following a disturbing 65% increase in knife threats and aggression during theft, the retail sector is seeking safe and effective methods to combat retail crime. The initiative, developed by the Retail Crime Ministerial Advisory Group, aims not only to introduce penalties but also to deliver a joint effort between police and the retail sector to make stores safer for staff and customers.

New Fine System for Shoplifting

The new Woolworths initiative introduces a system where police will address in-store offences with fines comparable to traffic tickets. The fines are tiered: £500 for stolen goods under £500, and up to £1,000 for higher values [1]. Moreover, criminal consequences will vary: up to 1 year imprisonment for theft under £2,000, increasing to 7 years for higher amounts [1].

Safety Challenges in the Retail Sector

Woolworths reports a disturbing 65% increase in knife threats and aggression related to theft compared to the previous year [1]. The company emphasises that staff and customer safety is a priority, with employees currently not authorized to detain suspects [1].

Woolworths Management Response

Jason Stockill, Director of Retail and Franchise at Woolworths, welcomes the initiative as a positive step forward. He emphasises the necessity of a collaborative effort to make stores safer [1].
